TEAMWORK, LEADERSHIP AND NEGOTIATION

his or her work if the accomplishment of the task at hand is identified with the satisfaction of his or her needs.

What drives an individual to work tirelessly, trying to stand out from the crowd? The need to achieve a certain status? The need for self-fulfilment? Let's see what elements come into play in this complex mechanism.

The perception of a need

The consumer society has turned the human being into an individual who is constantly trying to respond to a great multiplicity of artificial needs. Just when we think we have achieved happiness, a new need arises. Need is an emptiness that we wish to fill. Need is desire, a situation of imbalance between what the individual seeks and what he or she actually has. Generally, need manifests itself through attitude, behaviour, towards our environment or towards others, which can be perceived as a help or an obstacle to our satisfaction. It is important to stop and look at our own actions or attitudes as they may be a reflection of unconscious needs we have. The range of needs is immense, and they differ from one individual to another. We do not all prioritise them in the same way.

There are people for whom self-fulfilment at work is an absolute necessity, while others aspire to a secure job with a schedule that is compatible with other activities.

Our performance

The perception of need moves us to act to satisfy it and find balance; this is what we call motivated behaviour. In order to act, we need to perceive:

• That we can act. • That we know how to do it.
