MANUAL TEAMWORK, LEADERSHIP AND NEGOTIATION
TEAMWORK, LEADERSHIP AND NEGOTIATION
first day changed for the better.
Categorisation
Let us imagine a series of containers inside us that we can call categories. When we perceive an object, we mechanically classify it and put it into one of these internal containers. It is a way of being able to order the world, it responds to the need to orient ourselves in life. The same thing happens when we are introduced to a person for the first time, we are attributing a category to them, we have placed them in one of our containers. We perceive the other and categorise them on the basis of a trait that stands out, which is called a stereotype. Sometimes the leap from one container to another can be a quick process, but in other cases the attribution is enduring. What if we are wrong?
The first impression
At first I tried not to meet Juana, sure that I would not be comfortable talking to her. Sometimes I would pretend not to see her, to avoid interacting.
Mutual perception in a first encounter with the other is fundamental, as it can be long-lasting and condition all our behaviour. Our impression can be affected by a conditioned reflex. The characteristics of the person may arouse a negative reflex (fear, discomfort, repulsion, etc.) or a positive reflex (confidence, security, etc.).
Consciously advancing in the knowledge of the other is the solution to possible distorted first impressions.
