CASE: THE ADVERTISING AGENCY

Carmen is a publicist at the well-known agency Open Design and, due to her experience within the company and her good team management skills, during this quarter she has been asked to direct and coordinate a marketing project for a very important traditional client, the company Spots S.A. At the last meeting, the basic idea for the project was to be decided on the basis of the contributions of the whole team. All eyes were on Carlos, the graphic designer, as he always has new and creative proposals in mind. This made the group relax when it came to coming up with these new ideas, and caused Carlos to become somewhat annoyed. In addition, Jorge, who is also part of the team, always finds many problems with Carlos' proposals. María is a very systematic and organised person in her work and usually supports Carlos' proposals, always calming down in moments of tension within the group.

How many roles can you identify in this situation, and are there significant differences between them?

Formal role and informal role

On the one hand, we can point out Carmen's roles as director-coordinator and publicist. These roles are determined by the type of task she performs. We will call them formal roles. On the other hand, we can point to the role of proposal-maker. There is an expectation, the team expects Carlos to make proposals. This role is imposed by the perception that others have of Carlos. And this is what we would identify as the informal role. The informal role is determined by:

- A situation. A teamwork environment within the advertising company.

Perhaps Carlos, in another situation such as choosing a leisure activity in a group, would
