commitments involved in every linguistic act is the basis on which we build the trust that others have in us. But can we say that behind the respect for the different commitments, which are involved in each linguistic act, there is the same phenomenon that reveals itself in these particular commitments? In other words, are all these particular cases of the same general phenomenon? And if so, which phenomenon is it? Our answer is in the affirmative. Indeed, we believe that all these cases are expressions of the same phenomenon. Respect for each of these particular commitments is the expression of something global that comes into play in each of these cases. We are referring to respect for the other, to the respect that in social coexistence we give each other as persons. Humberto Maturana calls this love. We prefer the term respect.
