someone who makes statements that have no relevance to what we consider relevant?

Let us now examine statements. Will we be trusted by someone who behaves in a way that is inconsistent with what they state? Or by someone who makes statements on matters for which they have no authority? Do we see any relationship between such behaviors and trust? And in the particular case of judgements, will we trust someone who is characteristically unsubstantiated in their judgements? For example, will we follow their advice? Let us turn now to the cluster of linguistic acts that make up promises, requests and offers. Can we have confidence in someone who promises without being sincere, without intending to deliver what they promise? Will we be willing to rest on such promises? And what will happen, in terms of confidence, if we find that someone promises to do something they are not competent to do? Will we put ourselves in their hands? In addition to the domains of sincerity and competence, there is a third domain in which trust is also compromised when we make promises. This is the domain we call trustworthiness . We speak of trustworthiness in relation to the general competence that someone has, not to deliver what they specifically promised, but simply to deliver on their promises. These are people who may have been sincere in making a promise and who have the competence to do what they promised. However, given that there is often a time lag between making a promise and keeping it, sincerity does not guarantee delivery, and these people - for a variety of reasons - happen to have a history of failure to deliver.

Trust, therefore, is a judgement that is compromised in each and every linguistic act we perform. Depending on how we perform in them, others will have more or less confidence in us. Depending on how others perform, we will have more or less confidence in them. Our impeccability in respect for the
