Project appraisal
There is a basic screening that must be carried out before designing any proposal: Are we likely to get the demand accepted?
Are we technologically capable, do we see it as interesting for our business objectives, and are we able to coordinate it with other projects?
This phase is extremely important. Many companies rush into preparing proposals without prior evaluation. There are dangers in doing so:
• Failure to achieve objectives. • Success in a project that is, however, irrelevant for the company. • Feasibility of the project.
The feasibility of the demand needs to be analysed internally by means of:
• Resource estimation. • Estimating direct and indirect costs; is it cost-effective? • Time estimation; what is the lead time, is it feasible?
This analysis will be carried out taking into account the resources and infrastructure we have and could have.
Risk analysis
Remember that uncertainty and risk are present in every project, and that it is virtually impossible to foresee or completely eliminate them.
- Identification. Define a priori what can go wrong.
