may believe that the reasons for failure are due to internal controllable causes, such as skills, effort, intelligence, aptitude, behaviour, etc. Or we can locate them in uncontrollable external factors, such as chance, the type of task or the arbitrary will of other people.
Human profiles
We can admit that there are different human profiles depending on where they place the factors that have influenced the success or failure of their action. These explanations are linked to their self-esteem and will to a large extent underpin their self- motivation.
The same person may use different profiles depending on the situation, which will be marked by experiences of previous successes and failures.
• Self-esteem-preserving profile : The individual with this profile attributes success to causes related to his or her own person: "I have achieved it thanks to my intelligence", and failure to external causes, such as chance, others...: "I have failed". • Profile revealing emotional intelligence : The profile of an individual revealing emotional intelligence is aware of his or her possibilities and limitations; when influenced by external causes, he or she knows how to identify them. Both success and failure are attributed to internal causes perceived as controllable. If you are not selected for the position you aspired to, responses that would illustrate this pattern would be: "there was a better qualified candidate than me" or "I really worked hard to get this position". • Depressive profile: The individual perceives that he/she is not in control of the situation, has low self-esteem, hardly takes risks and when he/she does, prepares for failure: "I'm not sure that this place is for me, we'll see what
